Title: an odd PPTP issue
Post by: Andy on May 02, 2003, 01:33:05 PM
Hiya all,

I have just changed to ADSL from Dialup internet and have an odd problem.
The SME server can route to the internet fine (through an ADSL router), and I have changed it from a Server and Gateway config to a Server Only config. As far as I can see everything is working great.. well almost.

I can make a VPN connection into the server fine no problems, but I dont have any access to the internet once I do. I can access all of my local network fine.. just nothing else..

A tracert to anywhere external shows the SME server as the fist hop and then packets are dropped after that.

I am running SME 5.5 with all the updates installed.
I *THINK* it worked before I installed the PPTP update.. but I cant be sure.

Any help would be great!

I think you may have answered it yourself -

'and I have changed it from a Server and Gateway config to a Server Only config.'

Andy,

I take it from this, you mean you can VPN into the SME server from an external location but cannot access the internet at the remote location once connected to the VPN ? If so, check that you have not set your connection to use the default gateway on the remote network option.

Hi Andy

Ok

So you have ADSL at home? Where are you trying vp to?  I take it that you are tring to access your home server from some other location?

On your ADSL you have a sme server in Server only after disabling the server & gateway option. Unless i am reading this wrong you have a server with 2 nic cards on your adsl which is now unprotected from the nasy outside world.(Hmm not good)

Reinstate server and gateway unless you are doing this for testing purposes only for fault finding. server only is used for internal use only. This is usually because your network may already have some form of firewall protection. Server only mode needs to be told of where to look to get out to the outside world.

Can you confirm something? How many nic cards are you using does it look something like this?

  |-------------Local Lan--------------------------------|
                        |
                        |
SME Server(1x connection to your Local Lan)
                        |                 (1x connection to your External Lan ADSL Router)
                        |
                        |
                        |
                        ADSL Router
                        |
                        |
                        INTERNET

Change Back to Server and gateway and tell your server where your gateway is and retry, I dont know if you have already tried this? I am a little confused with what you have written.

Kind Regards Andy

Adserg,

My SME server has only 1 NIC..
I have an ADSL router (has built in modem) connected to the ADSL line and my Network.

So we have a site router at 192.168.1.1 and the SME server at 192.168.1.254
The router also has the External IP address.
I have configured the router to forward packets for VPN and TCP type 47 (also for VPN) to the SME server.

Now I can VPN in OK.. authenticate fine and access all of my internal network fine.

The only problem is that I cannot use the gateway (192.168.1.1) on my home nwtowrk to access the internet. I can ping it.. but thats it.

any ideas ?

Once you establish the VPN Link, get the IP configuration details of the link. What is the gateway listed there ?

It *should* be the ADSL Router, but I suspect it's not. It's probably the SME server. If it is, then you will need to play with the DHCP settings to get the SME server to pass the ADSL Router address as the gateway to your client PC. Otherwise, you will probably need to set SME back to server and gateway mode.

By the way Andy, why do you want to use the gateway on the remote network ?

The SME server assigns me an address.. and this is also the address of the default gatway, but this was the case before and it all worked before !

Yes, but as you said in your original post and highlighted by Barry :

> 'and I have changed it from a Server and Gateway config to a Server Only config.'

So you are NOT talking about the same system anymore and therefore cannot assume that behaviour you are accustomed to before should be the same now.
