I am trying to install my V5.0 on a new computer but having problems after what looks like a normal install. After I go thru the install and switch my boot sequence to boot from the HDD first it just stops when rebooting at the mesage
"verifying DMI pool data....... which comes just after the PCI device listing.
It doesnt go to the next step of showing the boot device, just sits there. I am installing on a new generic PC from my original boot/install CD which I used to set up the server I have been using for the past several years and finally died. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

First, you're using (or trying to use) a very old version of SME, which is no longer being maintained. Second, this is a hardware problem of some sort.

Third, don't cross-post to both forums.

this is actually not a hardware problem, i experienced the same on 5.5, here is a fix,
use dos tool fdiskon a bootable floppy, first view partition data, then remove all partitions.
reboot
use fdisk again to form a new pri_dos partition
reboot
format partition /s
reboot
( from compu hd )
see if it passes, it should pass now to dos.
install sme again.
has something to do with not writing the first bites in sector 0 of the hd.
Dunno how this happened but it occurs also if you try to use your hd used for sme for a normal dos os again by deleting the partitions. the header gets screwed up for some reason and won't be fixed unless you reboot between all actions.

There's a little tool called 'wipe' that will write zero's to your harddisk.
a read.me is included. Fast, small, simpel.
It's a dos tool, so you need a bootable windows diskette.
Drop me an e-mail and I'll mail it.
