Title: Dialin user can't see internet
Post by: Kees Vonk on May 21, 2003, 02:21:05 PM
I recently set up an e-smith 5.6 server with dial-in access for one user. When I tried it in a test setup I managed to get everything to work. However in the production setup the user that dials in cannot see the internet through the dial in connection.

My setup is to run e-smith as 'server-only' and have a dedicated firewall / gateway box (IP-Cop). I have tried Win98 and WinME as clients.

Can anyone tell me what I would have to do on either server and/or client side to get the last little bit to work?

The ipconfig command on the windows machine tells me the following:

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.2.134
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.1.2.134

The 'ifconfig' command on the server side tells me that (on PPP Interface):

IP Address: 10.1.2.134
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.255

The default gateway for the server is: 10.1.2.254. I can connect to the web admin interface of the gateway from the client machine, but for some reason I cannot get it to connect to the internet through the gateway (not even by specifying it as the proxy in IE Setup).

If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kees

You need to make sure the DNS server(s) your dialup user is using is accessable through your WAN connection.  I believe SME can easily be used for local LAN name resolution but you'll need to make sure your dialup user has public DNS servers configured.  Usually this would be the DNS servers assigned to you by your ISP.

I have pointed the SME server at our firewall (which works as a DNS proxy). I thought that would work as all other computers on the network use the SME server as their DNS server as well, I will hower try your suggestion.

Thanks,

Before I could try this, I had to restart the server yesterday (power failure) and that seems to have solved the problem.

Thank you very much for your help,
