Title: Old or New?
Post by: Mike Smith on May 14, 2001, 03:23:48 AM
What is the best configureation for E-Smith when it ask the 2 types of speed things?  One is normal the other says (For older PC) more stable something.  Which should it be on?

You mean the hard drive optimizations.

Basically if you have a UDMA33 controller and above, then set it to high performance.

Its one of the last configureation screens in the configure this e-smith machine thing.  Is that all it does?

What does the manual say it does?  Hint: http://www.e-smith.org/docs/manual/4.1/configmisc.html

For that matter, what does the screen itself say?

Yes, that's all it does. It's only enabling DMA (as it is called in windooz). But be sure you'r harddisk and/or motherboard is supporting this otherwise your server won't work and probably will hang or crash when you finish setup and want to reboot.

This is what happend to mee when I enabled this option on a board that didn't support DMA. E-smith wanted to restart but hang at the hdparm section which is the DMA support.
