I have been running SME 5.5 (and more than a few versions prior) on a 233mhz pentium I box in my living room with few difficulties and impressive uptime, but the box itself is a wind tunnel (so many fans, so little speed) -- so I decided to migrate to a newer (and much quieter) 450mhz pentium II with 320mb of memory.
Long story short, after setting up the new box just like the old one (including two users, which is all we have in the household) I scp'd the user's home and mail directories from the old box to the new one.
The new box is now online, and all is well, except for one thing: whereas one user (my wife) uses POP3, so all of her old emails are not stored on the server, I use IMAP -- and my old storage folders and whatnot have been transferred to the new server, but my IMAP clients (and IMP) don't recognize them.
Any ideas or suggestions?

You didn't say if you had a full backup from your previous build but from my experience I had a backup and restored over the top of a new build which transfered all my data, websites and email -:)

You could try this:
Recreate the folders using IMP. (Rename the old ones so they don't get overwritten). Then copy the messages from cur in the old folders to new in the new folders. Make sure the user/group ownership/permissions are right and you should be good to go.

If everything else appears to be fine, just your IMAP material on the new server not being recognized by the client, why not use the client to move the mail?
Start up your IMAP client, log into the old server, log into the new one, copy from within the client everything from server to server. That way you're assured the client will be able to read everything and any inconsistencies that might have crept into your mail folders won't be propagated this way.
