Title: connection problems
Post by: robert carnes on June 02, 2003, 07:04:38 AM
please help i am setting up sme 5.6 for the first time running as server and gateway on a dialup connection.under windows or linux i can get it to connect but under sme i cannot,it dials into the isp tries to authenticate then drops my connection, i have checked my username and password but it seems my isp must have the gateway ip which in windows i add it in the tcp/ip settings for me to connect without it my connection just drops out. so where can i add this or how do i get around it.

There was a recent thread here in the last week or two, have a look.
Just a thought, have you installed the latest update ?

The reason for the disconnection should appear in your /var/log/messages file.

I have this problem to, I could not get it to dial at all, Found out that when I installed it on a new PC it dialed, but the connection is never maintained.

I looked in the Diald log and it doesn't say anything

If you find a fix please post it

Hey wykyd

I refer to your other long thread as background.
When you say "it dialed, but the connection is never maintained", what are you doing to maintain the connection.
Do you have other workstations on the network that are creating web or email activity every 10 minutes or less (ie for the long setting you say you use).

The sme server will time out & hang up the modem if there is no activity occuring that uses the internet connection.

What is your situation ?

Yeah I have a number of workstations on the network that would use the SME sever to access the internet. It did dial but the workstations never got a response from sme server and the connection would drop.

I did notice that ippp and pppoe are not enabled, I dunno if this is right. I enabled pppoe to no difference and I tried enableing ippp but it came up confiuring diald and crashes.

Anyway I got around this by using an IPCOP box to sort out the connection and dhcp and relegating sme to server only. Not an ideal solution but a working one.
