OK, I give up.
I have been working for 3 days to try and get e-smith working with my adsl router.
The router is a dlink dsl 300
This should be one of the easyest things to do, and I have done it many times before, but now, for some reson, I install e-smith, and it dosn't pick up the external IP address.
I have tried this on 3 diferent PC's now, and two of the pc's run windows and find the external ip and gateway fine (Thats how I'm typing this) The other PC is too old to run windows.
Has anyone had this happen before? I'm pulling my hair out here, going around and around.

Hi Andrew,
What exactly are you getting when using the DSL 300 with the SME server ? What mode are you running SME in, etc. etc. Helps us to help you if you give more details.
BTW. The DSL 300 is a modem only AFAIK and not a router as such.

I am the stupidist person alive.
Kelvin, Thanks, your question solved my problem, and my server is back online.
Thanks very much.

The DSL 300 won't work. It requires that the receiving machine accepts DHCP instructions to get its address and there is no configuration available in SME that can do that without also trying to act as the authenticating source.
If you are trying to connect to an ISP that uses PPPoE you can set the DSL300 into bridged mode and authenticate from the SME server, but for an ISP that uses PPPoA this won't fly.
I've asked about this in the message '[e-smith Experienced User] Nildram UK ADSL' but received no replies as yet.
If you are in a position to do so, the simplest solution is to exchange your DSL300 for an SMC 7401BRA, which is a true router and works perfectly every time - in the UK it only costs 12pounds more.

There are some earlier posts on this.
The D Link 300 will work - at least the 300G+ will - but you have to trick it into recognising the MAC address of the NIC on your SME box.
The easiest way to do this is to take the NIC out of the SME box and put it into a Windows PC. You can then configure the D Link modem with your ADSL settings. All you then need to do is to put the NIC back into the SME box and restart it having set it to use its MAC address as it identifier.
I'm sure there may be a more elegant way of achieving the same result but it's beyond my technical ken. At least this way works!
I use Demon ADSL which also asks for PPoA.
HTH.

Which gateway setting did you use in SME?

Kelvin and Nick,
Your posts worries me a lot, I have just signed up for ADSL and looked through the forums to see if there was any problems with the D-Link DSL-300+ and could not find any and so now have one on order.
Now I have never ever played around with an ADSL connection before so I am soaking wet behind my ears, should I buy another ADSL modem?
I thought that the modem will do all the authentication and the SME will just use it as a gateway?

Hi Cyrus,
Most Ozzie ISPs don't have funny setups. Which ISP have you signed up with ? Are they using bridged connections, PPPoE or PPPoA ? Bridged connections are the simplest. PPPoE also no problem. I use the netgear DM602 ADSL modem with PPPoA connections because the modem can function in bridged mode, as well as a single port router for PPPoE and PPPoA connections.

Kelvin,
Just signed up with TPG, AU$80/mth for 512/128 unlimited download with a static ip was just too good to pass up!
I did get thier "free" usb modem, but have a D-Link DSL-300+ on order as I rather use it.
As for PPPoE/PPPoA and Bridged/Routed, well as I said this is my very first broadband connection and am frantically searching google to find the meanings of these and other terms as I type so I hope it wont be too much of a hassle getting it all working.
I have a 5.5u6 box standing by all ready to go, just waiting for Tel$tra to activate the line and me to get the dsl modem :-)
Is there any trick to installing them, will the modem do the auth or will SME?
Or does the DSL-300+ connect and then do I have to forward ports through to the SME?
Thanks for the reassurance :-)

Hi Cyrus,
TPG is a Telstra reseller. Most likely, they will use PPPoE. If so, just use SME's inbuilt PPPoE facilities and it should work. Set your DSL-300+ as a standard ADSL modem and not as a router. As you already know, SME takes care of the rest.
If you got a bridged connection (which is also possible), then just set SME to a static IP on the external IF (the addresses should have been provided to you) and again, set the DLink to a standard modem.
Kelvin
PS. I personally don't really like D-Link products:) even though I use a few of them (barest minimum).

Im in the process of getting ADSL connection with Telstra in Australia.
I want to connect my SME 5.6 box and will have a static IP.
Browsing the phorum leaves me happy it will work BUT
1. what modem am i best to use (it seems Dlink has hassles)?
2. how EXACTLY does one 'use the sme pppoe'?
3. I dont think i want a router, just a connection that looks like my existing modem, using sme in 'server & gateway' mode. is that right?
TIA Robert

Robert,
>1. what modem am i best to use (it seems Dlink has hassles)?
If Tel$tra does not provide one, I sell Netgear ones which should do the job for you.
>2. how EXACTLY does one 'use the sme pppoe'?
It's one of the configuration screens when logging in as admin (or just after installing SME).

That's fine.

The mac address thing really sux, I found this out the hard way when i first got the dlink 300. I know the dlink 300 is crappy, but it's all I could afford at the time.
