Title: courier imap and open-relay smtp
Post by: Brad on June 09, 2003, 08:59:54 AM
After switching to courier imap, I appear to be an open relay for my smtp server....since I can relay messages to my sme email account from an outside internet connection.  I followed the instructions from http://www.neddix.de/ and need some guidance on what/where to go from here.  I've tried swiching back to the "private" setting in "other email settings".  Anyone have any suggestions on what to try next?

You're supposed to be able to "relay" messages from an outside connection to the SME account; that isn't a sign of any kind of problem.  What is a problem is if you can send messages from an outside connection, through the SME box, to an address not on the SME box.

Oh, and the courier-imap packages don't have anything to do with SMTP, so they wouldn't affect that.

So, let me get this straight.  If I setup a fake address on a pop3 client, and setup my pop3 client from a non local network to use my sme servers SMTP account ....and send a message to a known sme user account, it should work?

But if I do the same thing and send a message to someone other than the SME user account people....then it shouldn't.  Am I understanding correctly?  Thanks for the help, by the way.

Yes, I think you've got it right.  That's just the way SMTP works--your mail client on an external network connecting to the SME SMTP server looks (to the server) just like another SMTP server connecting to the SME SMTP server.  It isn't considered "relaying" to accept messages for local delivery; relaying only includes accepting messages for delivery somewhere else.

Just in case you think Dan is on crack, or you want a second opinion:

Dan Brown is 100% correct.

Thanks to everyone for clearing up this matter for me.
