Title: Persistent cache?
Post by: Alec on June 16, 2003, 01:17:24 PM
I have just made modifications to a website on my SME 5 server, but I keep on seeing the old information whenever I browse to my server with another PC on my network. I have tried the settings in IE (refresh each time that IE starts) and have stopped squid, re-built the cache and still the same old stuff....Every PC that I plug into the local network is the same. If however I get off the network and dial in using a modem, everything is fine. I have had this problem before and it usually goes away after a week or so. How & where do I kill this memory/cache?

I would appreciate any advice that you may have.  Thanks ....... Alec

Look for Abe Loveless's contrib on contribs.org that adds a server panel on flushing the cache on the server.  Also, try using CTRL-F5 to view the page, that tells IE not to use it's cache but to download the page fresh again.  Depends if it's squid or IE that's causing the problem as to what solution will work for you.

Well I'll be buggered ... how silly do I feel. The Ctrl-F5 fixed it. Thanks very much, Terry and may I say ... What a terrific forum this is. Cheers, Alec
Title: Is SME server cache problem!
Post by: Dieter Reinhardt on June 19, 2003, 09:01:43 PM
I experienced the same problem with IE 6. Flushing the IE cache did NOT help.
I finally changed the IE LAN settings and told IE explicitly to use the local proxy server at port 3128. This seems to cure the problem, but it contradicts the SME manual which tells me not to use any specific proxy configuration for IE.

Questions: could this cause any unwanted side effects, is there an explanation for this behaviour, do I need a specific script to make IE interact correctly with SME server?

The explanation is that IE sucks. The solution is to turn-off all proxy behaviour under Connections->LAN Settings. Do not let IE automatically determine a proxy. Tell it that it has none, since the SME proxy is transparent.

The other solution is to use a better browser.

Title: Does not explain the observed behaviour
Post by: Dieter Reinhardt on June 23, 2003, 02:33:27 PM
I doubt this explanation.

I experienced the behaviour mentioned (i. e. the problem that pages did not update) when I had NOT marked the checkbox "Use Proy server" (actuall text might be different, retranslated from German version). I also deleted all locally cached pages, so IE had to reload all pages through SME server. Same problem.

Then I connected an additional workstation to the network that had never seen that Internet page, so it definitely had to access the page through SME server. Same problem.

The problem finally disappeared when I marked the checkbox and told IE explicitly the address of the SME server proxy (at ONE workstation). After that ALL connected workstations showed the updated pages, regardless of their IE settings.

I have no explanation for this since I am not an expert in network protocols. I can only tell what I have experienced: changing the settings (as described) at one workstation caused the SME server proxy to reload the page. I do not know if changing the setting was the real cause for reloading, this might have happened just by chance.

Well, seems that everybody lost interest in this issue. I had the same problem long time ago, and I remember that I had to delete some files from the cache area of the SME server. That was long ago, I don't remember much anymore...
