Title: Modem problems
Post by: Chris on June 19, 2003, 02:32:11 PM
I have started (well finished except for this) and upgreade of my server from a 200mmx running 5.6 to a p2350 with scsi (for a tape drive) running 5.6 and more disk space.
the upgrade went well enought after installing the 3rd party moduls (update.rpm, loginscript, phpadmin, sysinfo etc)

But then i hit a snag. the modem (serial) that is working on the old server does not seem to stay connected to the provider. what it seems to do is dial then handshake and get through. (according to optus) but you cant surf anywhere or ping anything. then after about 2 min the modem disconects and then waits and trys to reconect again.
Optus (service provider) says that the account is connecting fine and that it is not going to there 'startup area' where they put all connections that have a bad password. (believe it or not they dont drop your connection attemp when you connect to the network with a bad password. they still connect but send you to a private server with no access. strange)

I have checked and double check the connection settings and even tried it on another serial port. i even changed the irq settings to see if that would help.

is there an error log somwhere for this event?

anyone got any ideas?

chris

take a look in var/log/messages, it might shine some light on it.

i had similar probs this week, ended up replacing the modem

Try the following:
1. Look into the log files (messages) and see if you get error messages there. That usually give you a good indication what goes wrong.
2. Reconfigure the server and use 'l1m1' as modem initialisation string. You can then 'hear' the connection process.
3. Are you sure that the serial port in your new server and the modem hardware is OK?
