Title: DNS and server name

I installed the e-smith server and named her ns.mydomain.com.  Then re-newed my expired domain name mydomain.com last week.  I have been using anomyzers to test when the server could be seen from the outside world.  Tonight, just for fun I typed in ns.mydomain.com instead of www.mydomain.com and flash boom bash there is the web page.  What gives.  My registar has ns.mydomain.com pointing to the e-smith box when you do a whois you see ns.mydomain.com at 111.222.333.444 which is the same ip I can type in from the "outside" and see the web page.  But I type in www.mydomain.com and nnnnooooooo wwaaaayyyyy ddduuuddee!?! site down?!? opossum dead !!

Do I have to change the registars records to read www.mydomain.com AND rename my server www?  Or is there a better solution?

I think that you should name your server "mydomain.com" not "ns.mydomain.com".  That should do it... I think.

I have reset the server name to the default and still the outside world cannot see my web page when they type in "http://www.structuralsupport.net".  To see the web page you have to type in "http://ns.structuralsupport.net".  I don't get e-mail either at "jrejr@structuralsupport.net".  Help please.

E-mail that works is sremory@iname.com

Your problems are in the DNS setup of your domain, not in the e-smith server itself. You need to speak to your service provider and get them to create a proper DNS structure for structuralsupport.net. You need (at least) two external name servers (the e-smith server's name server is not publicly available), a valid SOA record, an MX record, and an A record for www.structuralsupport.net. If you don't know what all this means, your service provider should.

So my ISP should be listed as the DNS server one and two which point to my e-smith as the www, mail, ftp server for my domain?  

Could I load tinyDNS to be an external DNS server?  It is charooted and does not run as root.  That way I could be the server for my domain.
