Someone PLZ help!
Our setup is as following:
Our router is the dhcp-server and gateway on 192.168.1.1. The sme (v.5.6u4) is dedicated server-only running as web- and mailserver with several virtual domains.
Our workstations get dhcp IP from the router, and it also get assigned dns from the router.
Whenever I try going to one of my domains from the LAN I end up in my routers interface :(
On our old w2k-server we had to setup some kind of local dns to get the internal browsing working - e.g. I set the primary and secondary dns in the tcp/ip settings on the w2k-server to my ISP's nameservers, and then setup the w2k-servers IP as the DNS in my router.
We need the ability to browse our domains from the LAN. How do I set this up in SME 5.6?

This isn't an SME problem--your router's not providing correct DNS info. If you tell your router to give the SME server's IP as the DNS server, that should do it.
-
But that doesn't do it, and it works running the w2k-server. Don't I need to tell SME which nameservers to use?
Could it be my settings for the hostnames that are wrong? I'm a bit confused about all the settings below:
Hostname Visibility Location Local IP Global IP Ethernet address
ftp.borupnet.dk Local Self Modify... Remove...
mail.borupnet.dk Global Self Modify... Remove...
ns1.borupnet.dk Local Self Modify... Remove...
proxy.borupnet.dk Local Self Modify... Remove...
server.borupnet.dk Local Self
wpad.borupnet.dk Local Self Modify... Remove...
www.borupnet.dk Global Self Modify... Remove...

And if our router cant do that then use the host file........
and buy a different router
-
...or get rid of the router entirely, and use SME as it was intended to be used.
-
Aren't you a bit sarcastic? How do I use the host file?

I do not understand why it should not be possible? Anyone?
I just want to browse my domains from inside the LAN.
How do I setup the host file?

Seriously... save yourself a headache, get rid of the router and use the e-smith server as your gateway. It's designed to work best that way. It even handles PPPoE connections elegantly, which is saying something for a linux distro.
Server/gateway mode is extremely easy to set up through the server-manager, just pop in a second LAN card, re-configure the server from the console, and you're up! The included iptables firewall is more secure and configurable and than most router/gateway boxes on the market today.
If you're a glutton for punishment, you can manually edit the /etc/hosts or perhaps even the /etc/resolv.conf files to get what you want, but I don't recommend it because e-smith dynamically updates linux config files. Changes won't survive unless you do it through the e-smith custom template system. Better do plenty of research in the how-tos and forums first....
Good Luck!

well in winsysdir/drivers/etc there is a host datei. You can put in serverip & name here and the client will know where the server is.
This is not a new or I guess even recommended practise, becasue it would mean changing (copying) the host file on all client pcs, and when something changes you have to copy it all again....
Your network is not setup properly.
My network is as following
DSL Router 10.0.0.138 (routes all wanted traffic to 10.0.0.1)
E-smith (Nic1) 10.0.0.1
E-smith (Nic2) 192.168.1.1
Clients 192.168.1 101 -185
Default Gateway for clients is 192.168.1.1
I have only got the router because I had trobles in Holland getting what I wanted! (Thought I was buying an ethernet modem and got this junk :-))
The e-smith server can handle Internet connections quite well, and the router is really not needed.

OK,
If I get rid my router and setup SME in server and gateway mode, will I then be able to browse my domains internal from the LAN?
nimmer
-
Yes. DHCP is enabled by default, so all clients will receive DNS and GATEWAY information that point it to the SME server and gateway.
When your LAN clients request a domain hosted on your SME server, your SME server's DNS will tell your clients that it has that site available on the SME server's IP address.

It would interest me what sort of router you are using.

Hi Schotty,
I'm using a Zyxel ZyWall 1 - why?

Just wondering if you really cant use DNS on the router.....
My router has basic DNS but it works and that suits me just fine.....
Try using the server in gateway mode without the router........
