Title: FTP access to outside FTP-sites?
Post by: Kim Knudsen on July 13, 2003, 03:28:44 AM
Hi,

we are running a SME server 5.6u4 as dedicated server-gateway and it works fine except that we can't ftp to any external ftp-servers from the workstations in our lan (typically running Windows XP).

Whenever we try to ftp it just says (example given - it's the same with all ftp):

Connect to: (13-07-2003 00:27:27)
hostname=ftp.dlink.com
username=anonymous
startdir=
ftp.dlink.com=64.7.210.131
Connect call failed

Plz. help

Use a client that supports "passive" mode (CuteFTP 4 for me) and make sure that passive mode is checked off.  Works fine from here (5.5u4).

I've already tried that - doesn't work :(

can it be something with proxy-settings?

This thread is the only response to a search for "passive mode". There are no responses to a search for "Illegal PORT command".

I think Kim's problem and mine may be connected.

When I ftp to the SME server (5.6) from my internal network and then open a proxy connection to a second server (external to my network), I can not transfer files. I get an "Illegal PORT command". The SME server is trying to open port 500.

The second server enters _passive mode_, so this is not the problem. The only client I am using is _ftp_ from a terminal session in GNU/Linux 2.4.18.

Sounds to me like a SME configuration problem. I will begin my search for where. In the meantime any response would be helpful.

Thanks
