Title: Shutdown/Reboot Hang after installing ASSP
Post by: Brett Knuchel on July 15, 2003, 04:59:39 AM
I have just installed ASSP following the How to produced by Gene Cooper.
I have SME Server 5.6u4 installed and after installing ASSP I have a problem with Shutdown or Rebooting the SME Server.  It hangs near the end of the shutdown process after the following lines:

Starting killall: usb-uhci.c: $Revision: 1.275 $ time 15:22:46 Jun 10 2002
usb-uhci.c: High bandwidth mode enabled
usb-uhci.c: v1.275:USB Universal Host Controller Interface driver

In then has the cursor sitting on the following line just flashing away.
I believe these same lines appear on the shutdown process prior to installing ASSP but it doesn't hang.

I got the same result whether I used assp-0.2.1.zip (as indicated in the how to) or the newer assp-0.3.0.zip.

It also made no difference whether I terminated ASSP or not prior to the shutdown process.

Any ideas on how to overcome this problem would be appreciated.

As far as I know (not so far at all) assp seems to have nothig to to with your problem check something in your USB connections interfaces etc.
If you stop assp before shutdown or reboot and your system hangs anyway, probably there is another thing causing the malfunction.
assp is a standalone aplication and does not modify your system if installed as suposed.

I did a complete reinstall of SME Server after it happened the first time and I can guarentee it is to do with ASSP or the changes to configuration files made in line with Gene Cooper's how to because it was fine before putting ASSP on and after it started hanging on reboot/shutdown.  In regard to my USB connections I have no USB devices connected and I am pretty sure I have disabled USB in the BIOS.

I have found that the hang doesn't occur if you remove the addition to /etc/rc.local that is suggested in the How to by Gene Cooper.  The addition starts ASSP on bootup by running assp.pl.  Does anyone know of a way of starting assp.pl on bootup without putting it in /etc/rc.local ?
