How do I set sme server up to host a website so it can be looked at from the web?
Thanx
-
Simply read the manual. That's the least you can do right?
-
Where, I didn't see anywhere in the documation about how to set up a web server.
-
There's nothing to "set up"; it is a web server out of the box.
-
read the manual section about virtual domains
point your web browser at the ip address of your SME computer
voila!

You can also set up an ibay to hold a website, so you're not just restricted to one set of HTML files.
-
I set up both a virtual domain and i-bay, but how can I see the website over the net?
I can't even access it on my computer.
The documentation doesn't help much.
Thanks
-
RTFM or hire somebody to do it for you. You can't expect people on this board to do it all for you when you can't do basic stuff dude.
-
The secret is in the ibay properties. You have to set the "Public access via web or anonymous FTP" property to reflect the access you wish to grant. Then, internally, you can see your site via http://{servername}/{ibayname}
Similarly externally, if you've enabled external access.
And yes, the documentation DOES "help much", if you take the time to read carefully and understand fully.

Where do I get a global IP from?
-
You can get the external IP from the SME server manager web page in the "Review Confgiguration" section or from the console. There are numerous other utilities and methods to get this information also.
How is your SME server connected to the internet ?
-
What do you mean how is connected?
-
I have done all I need to so that I can host a website from my server but I don't know where to get the local ip and global ip. without these I can't get it on the web, right?
I'm setting this all up for the www, that's right too, yeah?
Sorry I'm a bit of a noob with all this but I want to learn.

choose :
1. with a modem, over a telephone line
2. using DSL / a cable modem
3. using a leased line / T1 / wireless connection
4. a university Local area network (ethernet connection)

I'm using ADSL
-
Well, can someone at least tell me where I can get a lot of info (very detailed) on this subject.
-
Can someone please tell me where I get my global ip and local ip so I can get my web server up and running.
And if anyone is going to say, get someone who knows how to do it, I want to know how to do it, that is why I ask.
I (the noob with servers) just need a little explaining.
Thanks

You don't need the local IP, but you do need the external IP. As RayG posted several messages upstream, you can locate that information in the "Review Configuration" screen in the web-based server manager.
-
So let me get this right. I click on modify setting for "www", and have location set to local and click on publish globally. Then under "review configuration" I take the ip from where it says, external ip and put that in to global ip and local ip (it doesn't let me further unless I fill both ips in), leaving the other one field blank. I press next, and then finished. After which I should see my website from that ip anywhere on the net? Or is there more I must do? I don't know maybe I have to do the same for "ftp" and"mail" for the whole thing to work.
If I made any mistakes here, please correct me.
Thanks

This is in reference to DNS records. Why are you doing this? Have you followed the 'SME as public DNS server howto" or do you have a servicelink contract from Mitel?
Presumably you have a dynamic IP address (you mentioned you are using DSL to connect to the net) ?

What I wrote is all I've done. I really know nothing. I have not done any DNS thing. Someone asked me to work it out for them, I don't know why. I have also been thinking of hosting my website from here too. my ip from my isp, would that show up in "review configuration"? Is that what I would use as my address? So how would I get my ip in the DNS records?
Thanks now and in advance, I appreciate all the help.

Please someone tell me where I get the ip from and how to get it into the DNS. Or tell me where I can learn too do it.

1. Look at www.dyndns.org.
2. Create an account.
3. Create your hostname and select one of the availible domains.
4. Change your server settings to your hostname and domain.
5. Set your server settings to server and gateway.
6. Select dynamic dns-service www.dyndns.org.
After rebooting your server check your logfiles for correct settings ...
But, with your knowledge you should not setup real internetservers!
