Hi,

Also does the Hylafax work just for one user to recieve faxes or can each every user have a fax user to send and recieve.
Thanks for your time

Every 'regular' fax machine works _only_ on regular phone lines.
It's not the sending, but the recieving.
You need to have a normal phone line. (PSTN or ISDN)

Hylafax (IMHO) receives for just one user (FAX or FAXSERVER) so someone has to administer the queue and redirect by hand (or mouse :) ) to the right user. If you use a cliente (like WHFC) and you use the commad addfaxuser (on SME to add valid users), anyone can send a FAX for his workstation!! well, at least this is the way we use it!! is there any other way, please share it!!

And always remember - Faxes are so 'early 20th century'!
Everyone must do their part to kill fax - an unfortunate invention that only played a part in delaying the take-up of email by the general populace.

Except that Fax is the only truly secure electronic mail.

One more interesting doc :

Under the heading "FAX INTERCEPTION".
Lest anyone enjoy a false sense of security :)

I suggest you check out Darrell May's how to on ontribs.org.
You will certinaly need an analogue line and modem (external) so you can talk to other fax machines.
I use Hylafax, in receive only mode, on my production ver. 5.5 server which also serves up the internet connection in my small office network. Although fax is "early 20th century", Hylafax is a great way to intergrate fax into a 21st century network. I have all my faxes printed to a printer so my "early 20th century" boss can cope with them (use a postscript printer to save much pain).
It is also possible to have faxes sent as e-mail attachments. Time has prevented me from implementing the next step which is to have faxes emailed to a "fax" account which can be accessed by all via webmail. As the subject line contains the CSID of the sending fax it is then easy to file faxes into folders based on the sending fax CSID....volia all incoming faxes filed automagically! And faxes availible from any machine you make webmail availible to.
Although I do not currently send via Hylafax, options include printing to a fax printer from apps, using clients (WHFC, Cypheus etc) or setting up a email to fax gateway for the less 20th century focused folks.
Anyway IMHO Hylafax is a great way to handle faxes if you still need to and well worth persevering with.

Certainly in the UK FAX derived eveidence is a rather grey area. It is fairly easy to spoof (anyone can set the ID of a FAX machine) and as has been shown easy to incercept.
Telex is the only legally accepted and secure means of fast electronic communication. Then only if you can produce the orginal bi-colour printout showing correct answerback responses. This is why telex is used for important transactions. Most people would come across it when used by conveyancing solicitors to confirm that the money for a house sale is where it should be before releasing the keys.
Also international shipping agents make great use of it. A vast majority of the world does not have internet or e-mail access.
Cheers
Dave.

Yes you can run your Faxserver on your DSL line. When you applied for the DSL they would have asked you which PSTN line you would like your DSL service running on. This is the line to put your modem onto. You will need to install a DSL filter where the modem plugs into the wall otherwise it wont work. I've documented my installation if you want to have a look comnetel.com/hylafax

Many thanks for the info, and thanks Lloyd for his info!

I have hylafax running from a modem on the filtered side of the adsl connection. In my setup Hylafax automatically converts incoming faxes to a pdf attachment and emails it to users listed in one of the setup files. It's a great way to scan documents - just fax them to your hylafax system on fine resolution and you end up with quite a compact acrobat document.
