Title: Dynamic DNS Updating
Post by: Walter Padgett on August 26, 2003, 07:47:37 AM
Good Evening,

Isn't there a contrib out there that allows the dns service of SME to be dynamically updated much like the Win 2k dns services? I did a search but all I found was information concerning the free dns services like dyndns.org out in the forum.

A penny for your thoughts,

Wally

P.S. Another southern word, sensous - Honey, sensous up get me a cold one.

Try looking at the numerous list of clients on www.dyndns.org

I am using ddclient, which will work with most of the dynamic dns services and most of the router configurations. It's fairly easy to set up, too.

Do you mean that you want dhcp to make a dns entry when it assigns an IP?  If so, then I think this is what you want:

http://www.lordsfam.net/downloads/production/dhcp/

From the site:
"Latest version of dhcp daemon. Allows dynamic update to dns server as clients refresh leases. Many thanks to Filippo Carletti for putting the integration piece together. I have updated the e-smith module to confirm to and work with SME v5.6 "

Cheers,

I think we're confusing things here:

- If you want to assign a domainname to the dynamic IP address from your ISP (external interace) you'll need a client like sme-ddclient (http://www.e-smith.dyndns.org/).

- If you're running dhcp on your LAN and want to update your DNS with the hostnames of your clients, you'll need dhcp version 3 (http://www.lordsfam.net/downloads/production/dhcp/).

Both contribs work great!
