Hi,
I would like to know user's opinion on the stability of IMAP vs POP/SMTP for sending and receivint e-mail to and from an SME acting as a gateway.
I have experiences sporadic hang using MS-OUtlook 2000 and IMAP. Is this common?

Perfect stability for me, all through the 5 series and now on 6b3.
Tens of thousands of emails, numerous folders, multiple users via LAN & 'net using MS Outlook 2000, MS Outlook 2002, MS Outlook Express 5, MS Outlook Express 6, Mozilla on multiple platforms, MacOS X Mail.app, Mac Entourage, plus who-knows-what-else along with Web mail.
All happy, all report no problems.
Biggest folder I know of is my spam folder (for training filters) kept pruned at about 5K messages. All served fine off of a lowly PII/200MHz/128MB also doing light Samba duty.

Not in my experience.
Make sure OL is set up properly. If OL was originally installed CM the converted to IMO it is best to remove & re-install. Turn off add-ins that aren't relevant too; don't need Exchange suppport in IMO for instance.
Personally I use OL2002 (XP) with the free SpamBayes add-in, a complex set of sorting rules for automagically sorting incoming emails off of one IMAP server into sub-folders on my local IMAP server, all with Norton AntiVirus 2002 in the chain. Again, runs fine.
If you're having OL problems take a look on http://slipstick.com, great resource for Exchange/Outlook news and tools.
BTW, folks use POP3/SMTP or IMAP4/SMTP, nobody uses IMAP for outgoing emails.
