Title: E-smith Migration from Novell 4.11& Excel
Post by: Adserg on August 27, 2003, 12:07:40 AM
Hi All

Silly Question?

I have finally ditched my old novell server 4.11, and am now totally SME 5.6

All's gone well no upgrade hicups really except one?

I have finally removed ipx/spx protocol and am finding that Excel is getting the right hump? Documents wont open.

Does ipx/spx hardcode anything in to the Excel documents? Or do i need to change anything on sme, I think everything on sme is working fine and i dont need to change anything on sme?

Silly problem i know but if anyone could drop me a line or two if you have come across this before would be a great help.

regards to all

I can't imagine that the ipx/spx protocol can be in any way be related to Excel docs.

Unless, of course, the shortcuts to the documents are actually pointing to the Novell system.

Hi Abe

Yes i know daft isnt it? i actually dont have any shortcuts. it's really weird ive never seen anything like it.

Why would excel care what protocol is being used? I can't think of any reason.
Maybe i am wrong? After a bit more testing SME aint the problem that's for sure.

Cheers Abe

Sorry to barge in I would like to ask a question that might trigger some help.

Have any of the workstations been setup in excel under "tools>options>default location" point to any novell locations?

Tnx Aron

Ive checked that, it's weird.

Never mind eh, i'll put it down to one of those things. After all it's only my home server nothing major.

Thank you anyway

Hmm, may be the old file lock issue with Samba raising its head; normally only an issue with database files but may be having an impact here.

You could try updating Samba to 2.2.8a and tweaking the smb.conf file for its locking options.
