We just updated our SME from 5.1.2 to 5.6 and internal DNS has stopped working. If we check the /home/dns/db.tolisgroup.com file, all of our assigned system names (entered via the web admin interface) are there. However, any dig, host, or nslookup results in an NXDOMAIN and the failure result is being reported from the root servers, not my internal named or its assigned forwarder.
This has worked properly under 5.1.2 and the system was updated using the standard 5.6 ISO image.
Any pointers in how to troubleshoot this?

Login to http://yourserverip/server-manager
(this should work if the network is working)
click on the review configuration link.
Do you see any domains listed under
domains?
What is your server setting, it must
be either server only or server-gateway.
I found that the server-gateway private
setting has issues with the iinternet.
Hope this helps.

Thanks, but I started there. All of the systems are properly configured and show up under server-manager. The system is a Server/Gateway, but has been since 5.1.2 and internal DNS has always worked up until the update to 5.6.
Also, not only can't we acces systems via our assigned names, but we can't get to them via the generic pc-00089 format, either. So, it appears that there is no internal DNS provision at all.

Got the exact same problem here. Named seems to be setup fine,
but internal hosts are not being resolved , and obviously fail when the request is forwarded externally.
Open to any suggestions.
thanks

It turns out that setting a forwarder in 5.6U4 works different than it did in 5.1.2. We removed the forwarder (thanks Charile) and all is now working as expected.
