Title: email retrieval from ISP
Post by: Anthony Holton on September 19, 2003, 10:46:32 AM
Hi Guys

How can I open up port 110 in e-smith v5.5 as I don't wish to use e-smith mail retrieval, I just wish to collect my emails directly from my ISP.

I use to be able to do this with version 4 using outlook express.
But not any more, any Ideas? I have waded through the forums but to no avail.

Regards

Hi

I have solved the problem for those of you that are interested.
It seems the e-smith has a problem resolving dns. I had to put in the the IP address of my ISP mail server in Outlook instead if the DNS names.
All is well, Now if I could only get Qmail to work???

Cheers

Were you using a FQDN?  Or just one word like "mail" or "pop3" in Outlook?  SME uses it's own DNS server, it doesn't lookup names from your ISP, so "mail" and "pop3" don't mean squat to SME's DNS.

I tried doing the same thing once.  It seemed to work, but I got a phonecall from the ISP.  He thought I was doing a Denial of Service attack on his mail server.

Anyway, luckly he believed me that it was un-intentional.
