Included with U5 SSH fixes and other updates is an updated pptpd. Also updated ipmasq (which imho was the problem.)
I am happy to report that my PPTP woes (could not maintain reliable connections from W2K behind and SME56 (but could with other linux distributions) box to a remote SME56 box) are apparantly over :)
Thanks to those who tried to help previously!

I´m glad to know you´re happy! Congratulations.
But Could you please post where you was able to find Update5... I tried a couple of mirrors and do not find them.
ftp.e-smith.org/pub/ was my normal site to do downloads (I use MC to do that!)... but it do not answer any more!
Do you have an rsync or wget command to download it?
Thanks!

I found Update 5 on the ibiblio mirror but it did NOT fix my PPtP woes from a Windows 2000 machine behind a 5.6 server to another 5.6 server ... still Error 718 after "Registering your computer on the network".

a) Did you patch both machines? (Mine worked after only patching the on in front of W2K box but I did anyway.
b) Did you remove any of the "fixes" that have been discussed previously?
c) Is your W2K box up to date with service packs/pptp update?
d) My Settings:
Security = Advanced/Custom:
Maximum Encryption
Only MS-Chap 2 checked
Networking:
IP/DNS = Automatic
Advanced = Uncheck use default gateway on remote
Enter IP address for remote server under WINS
PPTP type tunnel all options checked

ftp.e-smith.org was shut down some time ago. The mirrors list is at

Paul:
a) Yes.
b) No "fixes" had been applied ... new server installs.
c) More or less (SP3, all security updates).
d) I've duplicated your settings, all to no effect. Still getting the 718 error.
