Title: Erratic Logins
Post by: Chris Glanzer on June 05, 2001, 11:06:11 AM
As of monday (no changes or patches applied over the weekend, all machines rebooted (including the server)) my awesome, reliable, and robust e-smith server experienced its first anomoly.  It randomly allows users to login.  You might get in on the first time, or the 5th, or the 20th.  Telnet, webmail, and any other item that requires login works great.  Anyone else experience this?  It has run for a couple of month without problems.  Please give me any pointers.  This machine is straight out of the can (no patches or additional software running.)

G'day,

When you say that all machines rebooted, including the server, it sounds like you might have had power troubles.

Historically I have found that machines can "crack the shits" after a power failure causes them to go down. Usually a shut down and power-off will resolve this.

(No, this isn't the traditional 'get out and get back in' solution of the Windows world. Some hardware just doesn't seem to be as fault tolerant as others.)

Give this a whirl (if you haven't already). If it doesn't work, let's look at other steps.

Cheers,

Tom
