Title: Probl. with squid
Post by: Petur on October 13, 2003, 02:23:56 AM
Hi
I run SME 5.5.U5-02
For a long period I have had a problem. Suddenly the homepage on the server and the Internet access didn’t work.
I was still able to access the server-manager, but when I checked the log-files there wasn’t anything "interesting"
The only thing that solved the problem was a reboot (sometime it took 2 reboot, before it worked)
Then I read on the bulletin board about squid, and hoped I was getting closer. I had to wait for the next time the problem occurred. That happened to night, so I started putty and wrote: service squid status, the answer was: ok. But then I wrote: service squid restart, I got several.... and 2 ok, one for stopping, and one for starting squid.
And the Internet access and the homepage was up and running again :-)
Then I searched the log-files for squid and found this:

Oct 12 22:19:48 server squid[2425]: Squid Parent: child process 2427 exited with status 0
Oct 12 22:19:50 server squid[8915]: Squid Parent: child process 8917 started

Can anyone tell my what the problem is, and how to eliminate it?

I've got the same problem.  Except it's worse.  Check the cache.log file in your squid log directory.

2003/11/20 12:17:53| WARNING! Your cache is running out of filedescriptors
2003/11/20 12:18:09| WARNING! Your cache is running out of filedescriptors

And then it gets really slow... and finally dies.  Usage is usually around 40% for squid.  What's going on?  I've got 512MB of RAM, 2GHz.
