Title: Gigabit Ethernet RTL8196
Post by: trampas on October 26, 2003, 02:43:35 AM
I need some help. I have gotten a couple of a realtek 8196 gigabit ethernet cards I would like to install on my 5.6 system.

I downloaded the drivers, which are the source files from:
http://www.xterasys.com/drivers.htm (see product XN-152)

I then installed the development rpms from:
http://wiki.contribs.org/index.php?module=article&view=10&MMN_position=33:33

I then tried to build the driver and got a bunch of errors where it could not find the needed include files.

Has someone else used this card before and/or could someone email me the compiled drivers for this card?

Thanks

I compiled mine for SMP but I'm sure they'll work for a uniprocessor setup. http://www.comnetel.com/r8169.o

Chances are they won't. They'll certainly refuse to load unless you force them to load.

Charlie,

If I upgrade my 5.6 to 6.0beta3 would I have to go back and change all my templates again?

Thanks

Just curious, did you edit the Makefile as per the instructions prior to compiling? You have to change the line regarding "kernel version=2.4.whatever"

I did edit the make file. The main problem I had was I download the development tools for 5.6, which was for kernel 2.4 while the version I have, which I thought was 5.6, appears to have kernel 2.2.19

I ended up hosing my whole server, while trying to compile the driver, stupided on my part, I typed rm *.* -r -f where I should not have. So I restored from back up and tried your driver today. I followed the instructions on installing the driver from:

http://www.e-smith.org/docs/howto/contrib/net_card.html

What I was trying to do is install as a third network card for a dedicated connection to my workstation.

All went well, however I got a dependency error when I rebooted the server. Therefore I again restored from back up. I will try to install the devlopment tools again and see if I can build the driver locally.

If I can't then I will just have to wait for 6.0 if it ever gets out of beta.

People wonder why linux is not main stream, I have an electrical and computer engineering degree and do embedded firmware full time and I have trouble getting a simple network card working.

trampas,

Just switch to 6.03 and them 8169cards work out of the box
(like charlie said .-)
... at least they do here :-)

... and as to your other remark:
"Do you really think W*N95 would support Gigabit cards either ."
