Hello NG,
I can't get pptp working on a Win98-se machine, even though it works without a problem with WinXP.
- I've installed DUN1.4 + 128 encryption
- I'm running SME 6b3 + all latest patches
- There is no router or firewall blocking anything between the two machines.
- The same configuration with WinXP worked out of the box.
I guess the relevant log file entries are:
Nov 17 14:09:35 testserver pptpd[10880]: GRE: read(fd=6,buffer=80559a0,len=8260) from network failed: status = -1 error = Protocol not available
Nov 17 14:09:35 testserver pptpd[10880]: CTRL: GRE read or PTY write failed (gre,pty)=(6,5)
Could anyone please direct me in the right direction? I already tried all hints from previous postings in this forum.
thanks in advance,
Marcello

What connection does the W98 box have to the internet?
For the VPN connection properties on a W98 machine I have, under the server types tab
Advanced Options:
[ ]
[ ]
Allowed network protocols:

Thanks for replying Chris.
I tried your settings, but it didn't make a difference.
I actually don't go over the internet, as this is a test configuration:
[PC1]-------[SME1]-------[SME2]
PC1 is connected to SME1 (via hub) to eth1 of SME.
SME1 is connected via eth0 to SME2.
PC1 is a dual boot machine with WinXP and Win98. If I boot WinXP, I can connect to SME2, which makes me believe that SME1 & 2 are OK.
However, if I boot Win98, I cannot connect to SME2. I get an IP adres from SME1 and can ping to SME2, but don't get a PPTP connection.

Had a quick look around, but couldn't find anything specific.
I really haven't that much of a clue what is going on in the following, but it appears very similar to your problem.

good luck!
