Title: DNS - Public - Secondary
Post by: Finchwizard on November 21, 2003, 07:57:24 AM
Ppl,

Of all the places i've looked, and all the contribs I've gone through, nothings come close......to what i want.

We already have a Primary DNS Server on our network, which we maintain and own etc.....

But we are wanting to replace the secondary DNS server with a E-Smith to handle our stuff, so we can ditch a few servers and make it all into E-Smith.

Now has anyone got Public DNS to work with E-Smith, pref the 6 series.....

I've been running this for a while, and haven't found any stability issues or anything.

If there is no possible way to get Public DNS working on SME 6, can someone tell me maybe a way to get a DNS server going on a previous version of E-Smith, maybe 5.6 or so, but all the ppl that have tried, keep saying it's failed miserably....

And would it be able to do port forwarding to another machine for DNS, would that work...??

Public, primary DNS Works on 5.6. (I can confim.)

See the 'hints' section at the end for setup as secondary instead.

I changed the answering addresses on SME 6 beta 3. Now TinyDNS answers on the external adapter (I put DNS cache on the internal, but it doesn't really matter). Then I turned on AXFRDNS so my secondary can poll me for transfers. There are a few other tweaks if you are interested, but my SME works wonderfully as a public DNS server, I've even got load balancing set up.

I had to disable DNScache from answering since it didn't support the load balancing IP addresses, and will not answer as authoritative for anything.

If you look at http://cr.yp.to/djbdns.html you will find some reasonable how-to's and examples.

Cheers, I had a look at the sglinux.org page, and that's where I got the info from before hand......I modified some of the scripts, because they didn't work in 6 at all, keep giving errors......

Then when it gets me to do 'su admin' and reconfigure server, it doesn't ask me where to put in a key, which is what the website said it should do, I did however managed to get a DNS configuration panel in the server-manager.....

I tried with the 5.5 files in the tar, but I should probably have used the 5.6, I will give this another go.

Cheers for that other link David.

Hi all,
Could you please post or email the link that will explain how i can get my SME 6 to be a public DNS Server.

I just want it to answer requests about the domain it hosts.

Thanks in advance

Try this:

http://www.eviltyrant.com/sme_6b3_public_dns_howto.txt

This is the first HowTo I've written, and I'm posting before it has been reviewed by anyone else. So if there is any feedback please send it to me, and I will modify the document. I will post it on one of the SME howto sites when I'm satisfied that it is accurate...

Enjoy...
