Here's what I'm trying to do. I have a departmental server, setup in server only mode, I do not want to add (well, the users don't want to keep track of yet another password) the users to the system. I have an Ibay with some files that these people need to access, write access is ok but not needed. I need to enable anonymous, or guest, access to the Ibay or to the system itself, which ever is needed. Security really isn't an issue. I believe in 5.1.2 guest access was open because I don't recall this being an issue then, now on 5.5 (I know, it's old) it won't allow access without a matching account. The system will be on 6.0 as soon as I burn the ISO.
I've tried setting guest=Ok and the guest account as admin in the smb.conf (as a trial) and restart smb but no luck.
Anyone have any idea's?

Since security isn't a matter, try setting "security = share" in smb.conf.

But the e-smith config system will write over chages in the smb.conf so the chages has to be done in the custom templates (??) (Really not an expert on that item)

I changed it (via templates, it's really not that hard!) and it worked....sort of. Haven't had time to revisit this (or reply) due to work deadlines. A few (all 2K workstations) are able to access the share, but others are still being asked for a username/password. I'll take another look when time permits.

If it's just a FTP server for inside the local network
I would just use FreeBSD 4.8 Release.
When you install, you install with Minium amount of stuff, and it asks if you want to setup a ftp server.
Very handy, and you can allow Anonymous FTP and let them dump stuff into a 'incoming' folder.....
Just a idea.

Samba, not FTP, for access via Windows Networking, using ftp would be wayyyy over some of the users heads.
