Title: websites

Hello,

If you do not have a domain name can you still access the a webpage on the e-smith server via an IP.

I have created an ibay and given the world access but can only access it if I use the internal ip of the server.

eg: 192.168.100.1/home works fine but
203.164.*.*/home does not??

An ideas?

TIA
miked

In short NO. When you type a URL into your browser, say http://www.mikedman.com your computer asks the .com Name Server who owns mikedman.com and what is the IP address of the webserver (or FTP etc). In order for you to view a webpage on your webserver externally you have to be the owner of that Domain or refer to it using the external IP address ie http://203.164.*.* Hope that makes sense.

Are you trying 203.164.*.*/home from your local network, or from a remote host?  Does 203.164.*.*/home/ work?

Thanks Guys,

Yes the 203.164.*.* works fine from the internet. It ended up been a DNS issue.
