Title: DNS in Server-only - no Internet Connection
Post by: David Sauzier on December 06, 1999, 04:42:38 PM
I have just installed e-Smith Server  3.1 in Server-only - no Internet Connection mode and was wondering if DNS is configured or can manually be configured?

The e-smith server has a caching-only DNS server. So you can direct your desktop computers to use the e-smith server as their DNS server, and the e-smith server will retrieve and cache DNS information from the Internet as needed.

If you are using the DHCP server on the e-smith server, it will automatically tell the client machines to use its caching-only DNS server.

In server only mode there is a DNS server running, but it can
only resolve localhost and 127.0.0.1.

If you have another DNS server on your network, and have set up DNS primary server and/or DNS secondary server via the Name and Domain settings in the e-smith manager, then the DNS server will answer other DNS queries by forwarding the queries to your other DNS servers.

If you really want to you can configure DNS for your LAN (but you will have to work out the details for yourself, there is currently no support for that in e-smith), but if you have no Internet connection anywhere I don't see much benefit in doing that.
