What support is required? It sounds like this box would look like
a router as far as e-smith is concerned and I'm unclear what it
would provide which e-smith does not (and in fact, e-smith provides
a lot not listed on the above feature set).

I think that was a commercial message of sorts. E-smith works with most of these "router" boxes, D-Link included. Boxes from D-Link, Flowpoint, Cabletron, etc, work just fine with e-smith when configured properly.
