Title: More admin/policy howto docs
Post by: Paul Miller on May 24, 2001, 10:27:29 AM
There seems to be a healthy push for more features.  However, I would like to see added emphasis on day to day administration and policy tips for organizations, not just techies.

For example, the email sever may be the most valuable feature about esmith but I see little discussion of features that would help customers make policy decisions.  There are tradeoffs for any decision making process; the more guidance from leaders in the field, the better IMHO.

As mentioned here http://www.newsfactor.com/perl/story/8538.html most of the decisions in business are made by nontechnical people.  That is why Notes & Exchange are dictated by many larger organizations. We all know there are thousands of spin doctors convincing folks to buy their products.  Technical excellence is not enough.  Some realistic samples or success stories could be solicited from the user base or referenced from the web to give ordinary users a context for a reliable, reasonably secure mail system. I feel the Linux culture of being brief is at odds with this objective.

For example, what are the minimum requirements to operate a mail server over dialup?  My answer (I feel I should know this but don't) would be a domain with MX record and a user mail account served 24x7 somewhere on the internet.  A good discussion of the tradeoffs for the various options would be valuable so people would feel more confident they were operating in an effective way.

Regards,
Paul

Paul,
you have some very good questions.
I hope this Forum will take some time and answer some of these
administrative questions. I am very much interested in this topic.

Thanks
