Is it possible/worthwhile providing a backup to these lists via a series of newsgroups? I quite often feel that it's difficult to keep track of the train of thought via a stored mailing list, and most newsgroup readers are far better at this.
It's also a pest when my mail server goes down, and the backup mail server flushes mail before my system comes back up, which means I loose some messages - maybe only 5% or so - enough to be a pest, especially if I'm waiting for a reply...

This isn't a mailing list, it's a bulletin board system, with a permanent serachable archive - http://www.e-smith.org/bboard/ should have all you want.
