I'd like to see a a more complete set of backup functions available.
i.e. tape erase and format, selectable backup of ibays

With many tape drives you will get TapeWare Software. It will do the job for you and works much better than flexbackup. There is a linux version on the install cd wich you can use on e-smith. I have installed this software on several SME/e-smith servers and it works very well.

Many of my customers use an ibay to store CDs of PC software (MS Office, for example). At present this is being backed up every night - and we already have CDs!! Any chance of being able to select more precisely what gets backed up and what doesn't?

Yes, you could do that with flexbackup.
Take a look in /etc/flexbackup.conf in the "exclude string" line.
Bye.
