Title: Hardware Compatibility Database
Post by: Jason Judge on December 06, 2003, 03:36:12 PM: This is my wish: somewhere to go to find lists of hardware compatible with SME/e-smith. This can be kept updated by anyone installing e-smith, and can include any special steps that were taken when getting something working (perhaps a star rating on ease of use?

This would need to be catgorised a number of different ways: by vendor, by country (different equipment available in different countries - perhaps allowing aliases where the same device is sold under different names), e-smith version, type of device or equipment etc.

Hopefuly, it would then be possible to build a server by picking from lists generated from such a database.

This isn't just a list of 'compatible hardware' as listed on RH sites and suchlike, this would be based on actual experience of installing and using the server.

everyone with a running installation is happy and never wastes a thought to that list.

You might be right, but even if people only report hardware configs that did NOT work, that would already be quite helpful.

it seems only REALLY old and under done pc's have problems!
some guys should throw out thier tin cans and string and just use something 1/2 presentable.
(and ive only just changed my PII 200 to a celeron 450, so it does not have to be much)

clearly though the what DOES NOT WORK List
would be best.

Actually, nearly all of the "older stuff" with the exception of Really, really old stuff, have no problems.

It's the really new stuff that you need to worry about ! Search the forums and you will see all the sorts of problems people get into when the motherboard / chipset / hardware development outpaces what is "supported" by the base OS.

I for one would actually be much happier if the base SME releases were based on standard (as in in the normal downloadable distro) Redhat version kernels and leave the option of using the supposedly more secure and updated kernels as an upgrade option. Not every installation scenario requires hack-proof / bulletproof kernels. The range of hardware that can be used with SME will increase a fair bit if SME uses the normal kernels.
