Title: tested contribs as install options
Post by: .nate on December 20, 2003, 12:24:43 AM
How about all the tried and tested contribs as install options during setup?

There is so much great stuff that people have built to extend and enhance e-smith but you practically need a database to keep it all organized.  Personally, I keep an install log of all my upgrade rpms and "how to" docs, but it has become a huge set of instructions to get the box set up exactly the way I like it post .iso install.

I agree completely with this (in fact I was intending to post this very same suggestion :).

Although some contribs are for special purposes, many are general-purpose enhancements, to the point of being almost essential. Bringing these into the core will make the distro that much more useful and impressive from the start.

There's also potential for conflict with loads of optional contribs, especially if they add into templates-custom. If two contribs customise the same template, you're in trouble!

I appreciate there's loads to do with the project, but this one could add a lot of value with relatively minimal development effort.

BTW I'm on the volunteers list - have I just talked myself into something :)

You can achieve something like this yourself if you build your own custom iso, there's a how-to that steps you through it. I've done it to include the packages that I want so that it's all there in one go. The idea certainly has merit, see how popular this thread is and the feedback within to see what I mean
