Hi,
Does anyone know if e-smith can be used as a gateway for Telstras ADSL service ?
If so are there any issues peculiar to the setup ?
Thanks
Paul A.

Hi Paul,
E-smith should work like a dream with Telstra ADSL. The only minor problem with Telstra's ADSL is that the dynamically assigned IP address is a lot more dynamic than the Bigpond Cable IP address. (I use cable and I've had the same IP for about 6 months but the ADSL changes every couple of days) It can cause all sorts of probs with your servers and things like IPSec tunnels etc. Luckily E-smith has support for a few dynamic DNS providers bundled in. When setting up E-smith select PPPoe and don't forget to append @bigpond to your username.
Cheers Lloyd

Paul,
I have done a 4.1.1 install using Telstra ADSL with dynamic ip addressing, and it went just fine.
I'm in the middle of another project using Telstra's new BigPond direct solution with static ip's etc and using 4.1.2 on an ethernet modem (D-Link DSL300). So far I can't get the client (e-smith) box the authenticate up-stream. Was working with the telstra techs for an hour or so last night ... still no luck.
Has anyone else had any success with this type of connection? Am I stuck with a Cisco 827 for the authentication?
Regards
David

If you're talking about the dynamic-IP service, then no, it drops in beautifully.
If you're talking about Bigpong Direct, then I'm afraid I don't know. I have no experience with this service yet.

have been using e-smith with adsl for the last two months and it works out of the box with no mods whatsoever, the manual wasn't much help in how to setup but a little trial and error and it all worked out perfectly. i have since built a few more of these servers and it also works perfectly with optus at home cable as well. if you get stuck with anything on how to set it up feel free to ask
