G'day:
I have set up E-Smith 5.6 to do "continuous" dial-up ... I actually have a dedicated modem connection with my ISP, with a static IP, but E-Smith's setup doesn't seem to cover that situation.
Anyway, I need to bring the ppp0 interface up and down manually, sometimes it is up all day and other times only for an hour or so. None of the usual Linux/RedHat tools like "ifconfig" or "ifdown" seem to have any effect on E-Smith, nor is there anything in the console or web control panels.
How can I manually bring a ppp0 connection up or down on the command line?
Thanks

To answer my own question ...
set USERCTL=yes in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ppp0, and/or in the corresponding e-smith template of course.
Duh!
