I've been running SME for the last year or so (first 5.5 running on a 166MMX laptop and now 6.0 running on a Celeron 1000).
Does anybody know whether or not there are other "appliance" type distributions out there with similar functionality to e-smith?
Thanks!

There is clark connect though its fairly different and is more of a gateway/filter.
Ipcop/smoothwall arent comparable as they are designed to be security devices on the gateway only, although SME esque is possible with them its not advised by the makers.
There is EnGaurd http://store.guardiandigital.com/html/eng/products/software/workgroup_overview.shtml which looks great, but the free one is almost useless.
I havent found ANYthing half as good as SME so far...

Sun release Qube OS under BSD style licence http://open.cobaltqube.org/

www.whitebox.org but no where as easy to manage as sme.
It's basically redhat enterprise edition without the trademarks.
Very slick gui that could almost make me convert my thrashbox from win2000...
