Title: Secure Email on SME 6 Outside Local Network Not Working
Post by: MikeH on February 03, 2004, 10:17:25 PM
Have upgraded from SME 5.6 and Clients cannot send email from outside local network. SME 5.6 had a contrib that worked enabling SMTP authentication or SMTP over SSL. Does this work on SME 6 or is there another contrib somewhere. Can't even find the original 5.6 contrib anymore? Have to fix this problem otherwise will have to put SME 5.6 back on line again!!!

Further checking of this and Webmail when activated is fully functional from the Internet but SMTP authentication fails with any other email client. Is there a contrib for this as with SME 5.6 to enable SMTP authentication from the Internet?

No unfortunately there are users who are conditioned to using things like Outlook and Outlook Express and there are restrictions on attachment size in Webmail.

.. considered using a VPN - real easy with W2K/WXP & SME6.  Once the VPN is up the system treats the remote users as local and email requires no authentication stuff other than the standard username/password.

Just a thought

I am looking for something similar, from the qmail home I have found the following:

http://www.fehcom.de/qmail/smtpauth.html

If it works I'll report back here.

In doing more research, it would seem that SME is using a front-end to Qmail called mailfront

http://untroubled.org/mailfront/

This front end does allow for SMTP AUTH, but it would seem the default qmail rules override it anyways.

Perhaps you can make more sense of it.

Here is a solution, it is a little dangerous as someone can imitate an email address, but:

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/smeserver/contribs/dmay/mitel/contrib/Mailrules/SME5.6/

This will allow you to override the default mailfront rules with your own.

Such as allowing fred@email.com to send email to *@* using your smtp server.

Has anybody tried this on SME 6? Latest info I have is that there is no patch yet for smtp authentication with SME 6.
