Title: port forwarding

I am going to be changing ISPs soon, and need maintain email etc. I have a spare SME 6.0 box available, so I thought I would set it up for the new IP and forward the appropriate ports to my existing server until propagation of my new ip is complete, then re-configure the original server to refelect the proper ip.

Is this the best way for a short term fix, or should I do something different?

I have tried searching on this subject,can not find anything

You could use MX record in the DNS (hosted at your DNS provider) to create the second mail server for your domain with higher preference number (lower priority). When both servers up mail will be delivered to your old server, after your new IP is up, you can disconnect your old server from the Internet and new server will start receiving e-mail. After this just transfer old messages and files from your old server to new.
For the websites (if you use it) you can sync content of the site and change A record to the new IP. Keep the old server in place to answer web requests until all the DNS caches expired. (a couple of day sometimes)

Thanks for the idea on using the MX record, That will take care of the email problem.
 
My old server is the one I am going to keep on line.

I only need to re-direct the mail for a couple of days until the IP's propogate. I have created an account with dyndns.com that points my domain names to my current IP, so when my email catches up I can quickly reconfigure my main server and I am good to go
