I have a hard drive that is failing :-o with a 5.1.2 install and would like to switch the hard drive and upgrade to the latest and greatest. I am thinking that I should do a desktop backup, switch to new hard drive, install 5.6, restore backup from 5.1.2 install to 5.6 & then upgrade to 6. Is there anything I should lookout for when doing this? If there is a howto or post that I missed in my searches please point them out to me. Thanks.

it's a good idea to destroy the 5.1.2-SME, it is not secure.
i think your way is practicable.
but why do you go the long way around with 5.6?
install a fresh, clean 6.x and do the backup of your user-data.
maybe you have to configure your 6.x (firewall, email, ftp, ...), because many settings will not fit.
