Title: strange dhcp behavior
Post by: robbie on February 06, 2004, 03:45:01 AM
My SME 6 server provides dhcp services to my local lan and has been working flawlessly. Today I noticed that one of my XP machine did not have an IP address assigned. So I went to network connections and told it to repair. When I did this I noticed that the adapter was receiving an IP address and then immediately it was going away. This behavior of receiving an address and then it going away seems to happen about every 5 seconds.

After noticing this I logged into my SME server and looked at the dhcpd.leases file and noticed that there was about 200 leases from my two machines. I stopped dhcpd cleared out the leases and restarted dhcpd. This did not make any change and the dhcpd.leases file started filling up very rapidly.

At this point I turned the SME server off and configured my Watchguard SOHO to provide dhcp services to the network. When I did this everything started working fine.

Does anyone know what might be going on with the dhcp server on my SME box?

In advance, I would like to say that I appreciate any help that anyone might be able to give me on this manner.

I would get weird behaviour on anything that has a file share. Usually in the form of THE SME server drives appearing as if on the device providing the share.

Consequently if I have a share I use a fixed IP for that device. Not within the range of DHCP ip's . No more problems.

k_graham,

Thank you for the post. This seems to happen on any device plugged up to my local lan though. When dhcpd is active it constantly gives and takes away addresses on my XP boxes, my wireless ce device, my tivo and anything else I try.

I did not mention that when this started happening I had just installed http://sme.swerts-knudsen.dk/ clamav and spamassassin scripts. I noticed the problem directly after rebooting. I should have mention this in the first post.

Are you running your smeserver in stand-alone or gateway mode (I would guess stand-alone from the e-mail, but NEVER assume)?

Yes, it is in "server only" mode.
