Hi, I'm trying install SME 6 on a Compaq Proliant 1600. After booting from CD (or DISK - it is the same result) SME Server detects thy SCSI Controller. A few seconds later Linux says "Running anaconda".
5 (or 10) Seconds after this message the System freeze.
I tired many compatible SCSI Controllers - noting happens. Windows 2000 can successfull installed on this System.
Well, how can I install SME 6 on this System?

I have ML series compaqs and there is a Cd called Compaq Smart Start - see if it applies to the 1600,, if so get the latest and search this forum, you need to pass some parameters to the boot kernel for memory for compaq machines...I havent installed SME on any of them yet though

I know, I'm a Compaq technican.
I successfully installed
SME 5.1 on Compaq Proliant 800
SME 5.6, 6.0 on Compaq Proliant 2500
SME 6.0 on Compaq ML 530, DL 380
but I can't install
SME 5.6, 6.0 (final) on Compaq Proliant 1600!
any suggestions?

I have successfully installed SME 6.0 on two Proliant 1600's. First I had also problems with anaconda when I tried to install in regular mode. With the parameter 'nousb' SME 6.0 installed with no problems. It seems that the USB-implementation (chip) is not compatible to rest of world. Of course, the USB interfaces don't work after installation.
Maybe, 'nousb' works for you.

Worked OK for me. I just ran 'system erase' from SmartStart, then booted from the 6.0 CD. Haven't tried 5.6, we still tun that on an old Proliant 3000.

I am having the same problem. How do you pass 'nousb' to the install?
Thanks!

Never Mind - I found it.
Press the shift key while booting up. I used pci=bios. Seemed to work just as well as nousb.
Thanks!

The command is "accept nousb" on the prompt "boot:" after you press Shift key.

Here might be the solution:
When installing press control-key+c when Linux boots.
At the bootprompt type the following line:
accept text apm=off lowres noapic noht nomce nousb nousbstorage skipddc
I also had a few network problems, just as I expected. The TLan integrated NIC doesn't work properly on a version of RH Linux above 7.3 (SME 5.6 or better).
Disable with SmartStart (Compaq server config tool on cdrom) the onboard NIC and add another LAN card (PCI). I added another Compaq card based on a Intel chipset NC3120. Everything seems to work pretty well now.
After installing test the working of your NIC:
type ifconfig to see what happens on the NIC of the server. Ifconfig normaly froze after calling the command when I tried to use the integrated TLan. When you can see the output of the NIC(s) on your screen, then it looks good!
I also transfered a large amount of data to an ibay for testing and there where no problems detected. Under the TLan the LAN-connection collapsed and there was no connection possible with the server. Under the TLan you'll have a very instable networkneighborhood. SME versions below V5.6 don't have this problems as far as I know (RH Linux 7.2 and lower). Perhaps a driver/kernel problem? I don't know. But what I do know now it's cheaper to offer a LAN-card then troubleshooting the TLan. It saves you a lot of time as well. Somebody out there who likes to create support in SME 5.6 or higher for the TLan??? :hammer:
Note: I'm going to make a HOWTO for installing SME on a Compaq Proliant. I'll upload the link to this forum.
