Is it possible to run bind on SME 6.0 final. I need to set up a public DNS

You should be able to run bind on the SME server BUT !

SME already has an DNS server, tinydns (http://cr.yp.to/djbdns/tinydns.html).

Maybee you can use tinydns instead ?!
