Title: Fullstops (periods) in usernames

Is it possible to create usernames for ESmith 5.6 that contain full stops (periods)? I want to create usernames like surname.firstname. I know E-Smith creates pseudonyms in this format but I want the users to be able to logon to IMP using the surname.firstname format.
