Sounds daft....
I have installed sme server and I can ping the network address of the server but cannot connect to the default webserver page (apache) from my web browser on the local network. What have I forgotten to do?

1. What error message do you get in the browser ?
2. Can you connect to the server manager ?
http://localip/server-manager
3. If you disconnect the network cable from the SME server, can you still ping it ?
4. Check the messages on the screen when you boot the server and check that all services starts correct or login to the server and check the boot.log.

I think your workstation's network configuration needs the gateway IP address of your server. Then all you need to do is type in the correct server URL address in your workstation's browser.

Probably a dumb question, but . . .
You have remembered to let your SME-box run DHCP server, right ?
And you have configured your workstation to use DHCP, right ?
