Title: memory usage creeping up
Post by: wacko on February 22, 2004, 03:41:35 AM
Hi

I recently upgraded the machine I was using to run SME6 from an old pentium 120 with 64mb RAM to an AMD duron 1.3ghz with 512ram thinking it would be more than enough for what I intend to run it as.

After restoring some of the old files, I installed spamassassin + clamav, fetchmail and mrtg. Its downloading mail from about 6 accounts for processing. It was doing the same thing on my old server (occassionaly spamd and clamd would die presumably from the load) which I assumed would not happen on the new server.

But The memory usage seems to climb up on the server it went upto 97% after which i reboot and it came to 23% and then has been gradually rising and is currently on 79%

Quote
Mem:   481832K av,  382132K used,   99700K free,       0K shrd,   75424K buff
Swap:  265064K av,       0K used,  265064K free                  160620K cached

The processes all seem to be on 0.0 percent so I cant understand what might be eating up all the memory as I'm sure it shouldnt be using this much

Any helpful hints would be most welcome

Thnks

Have a look on this message (http://boudicca.tux.org/mhonarc/ma-linux/1999-mhonarc/1999-Dec/msg00218.html). :-P

I am getting some 120 MB swap average after day 21 after reboot.
It starts in say a week after a boot and then creeps up.

How strange - as there is a plenty of ram (512MB) for a small workgroup (14 users) with the usual additions to the server (spamass/gallery/clamav)

not that it is alarming though it quite looks like some gremlins in there.

Had a similar problem. Mine showed up sooner than your 21 days. I only have 125M of RAM though. Can't remember exactly how I solved it. Solution had to do something with one of the RPM's I had just installed (don't recall which one). I uninstalled - reinstalled the program and updated settings from the templates. Then I rebooted the server and it's never returned again.
