Hi,
Somehow I cannot logon as root or any other account from console(by press ALT-F2 to access console), it does not print out any error message, just prints out logon prompt again. If I type in wrong password, it will print out incorrect password message. I knew that power failure happened in my area few days ago, is the power failure caused this problem?
My server is SME 5.5
Can anyone please help me?
Thanks in advance

You could try booting the server up in Single user mode and changing the root password. With 5.5 I think when you see the boot screen, hit ctrl-X, then type esmith Single, when it comes up, you should be root. Then do a passwd and change the password. Reboot and I believe you will be all good again.
Note: I am doing this from memory, I don't have access to a 5.5 server anymore.

JB

SME5.5 may have security issues that would allow hackers in. SME5.6 or SME6.0 should be installed.
If you would like to check your file system, you can boot up with your emergency boot disk or download one of many recovery disks.
If your server is a gateway, you've probably been rooted. Google "rootkit". Check the /root directory for shell file logs with ls -a after booting with a good kernel. If you have been rooted ...backup ...reinstall SME5.6+updates or SME6.0, then restore.
This is based on my limited knowledge of the universe, YMMV....
