I have installed e-smith with a 56k ext modem dial up. When I connect to my ISP (optus.com.au) I think I am having script problems from there. I ran minicom as a reader advised and I seemed to have a problem with/around chap? I also tried this with a different ISP and get the same thing. I know the modem is ok as I have connected with red hat. I am new to linux (very new) and dont know where to go from here. Can anyone help.

We are running an e-smith connected to Optus and have absolutely no problems, as is one of our customers. E-smith connected up straight with no problems in both cases.
I have one little question.... What type of modem are you using?

I tried several different modems. A netcomm roadster 28.8, a 3com us robotics, a ktx56 and a diamond voice 56 v90 (all externals). I ended up using the netcomm as I got a successful connection with red hat. It seems to dial ok and connect so authentication must be ok however this seems to be where the problem starts. It stays connected for maybe a minute then disconnects and redials. Any ideas and how to do them would be appreciated.

Now that I think of it, I remember that the first copy of e-smith that I installed had the same problem.... Until I discovered that I had typed in the wrong password! - Slightly embarassing!!
Check that you are indeed using the correct password. - Remember that they are case-sensitive.

I just had another thought. - What are your dial-up policies? "Short" is a major waste of time in Australia. - E-smith makes the connection, verifies, and then breaks the connection within a couple of minutes if you don't start using it! Details of what these policies mean are in the manual, but I would suggest that you use "long" or "continuous" while you are getting things working.
